/2013-2019

Ground Mass Music, founded in May of 2013, focuses on uptempo styles of electronic music. Our initial releases explored 160 bpm styles of Juke, Footwork and hybrid Footwork Jungle. We now have developed a more diverse range, including 170 bpm Deep/ Dark Drum and Bass, Experimental and Autonomic styles being released on the Air Mass sublabel.

To show direct support for the label please purchase our releases on BANDCAMP. Our releases are also available on most digital platforms including iTunes, Amazon Music, Junodownload to name a few. Some of our releases are also available for streaming on Spotify.

/2021-Present

Re-entry of Ground Mass // Air Mass in 2021 takes on a different approach than the previous model from 2013.

The Premise

Originating from the hybrid sound of Footwork and Jungle, Ground Mass Music focused on releasing music within the 160-170 BPM range. Due to the undiscovered territory of the niche genre, experimentation and exploration led to a fantastic network of creative artists with the goal of exposing innovative sounds influenced from distinguished styles of Chicago Footwork/Juke and UK Jungle. Over time, the collective continued pushing boundaries and moving beyond what was becoming a saturated field of similar sounds.

As the inventive styles grew, Air Mass Music was launched in 2016 as a sub-label - an outlet for releases that were distinctively different from the Ground Mass sound. With only four Air Mass releases, the sub-label never evolved into what was fully intended.

The Shift

Loss of interest or desire to continue the output of the label wouldn’t be an accurate explanation of why the label hit pause for years. Family, career … life in general prevented time and dedication needed to do the music justice. At the same time, more focus was put on personal projects and extensive releases for other labels.

The discovery of styles and processes grew personally within production over this time. Returning to roots in simplistic analog gear led to sessions of improvised setups consisting of tape loops, effects, non-traditional instruments, field recordings, and unconventional applications.

The Outlook

Contemplation of ending the label had been relevant over the past couple of years. But due to numerous projects, it has been decided to continue with both labels. Upon return, Ground Mass // Air Mass will serve as an outlet for completed personal musical projects. The majority of the output will fall under Air Mass, centering around ambient, experimental, and sound design - Ground Mass will have seldom releases, primarily focused on beat-oriented music but not limited to specific genres or BPM.

The label is not actively seeking contributors at the moment, though the inbox is always open to receive demos for potential release. Please be thoughtful in submissions, demos should reflect the ethos of Ground Mass // Air Mass.
